The County of Silver

We are in Luna County, New Mexico, and here at the LoW-Hi RV Park we had a lovely silver sunrise to start our day.
This RV park has a wonderful little area called the Bark Park, fenced in for doggies to run in. Here's Chorro trying to decide whether he is a city dog or a country dog.
After pondering this a bit, he favored city.

"Luna" is the name for silver in alchemy. Deming, the city we are camped at here, was at one time an important border crossing between the United States and New Mexico. In the 1850's, the Gadsden Purchase added lands south and west of Deming to New Mexico Territory and now Deming lies about 30 miles north of the Mexican border.

Deming has the most amazing small town museum. It's a building with a small front facing the street that goes on forever in all directions inside. I spent several hours wandering through it. There is so much pioneer history, which I really enjoy, but the most spectacular thing about this museum is its collection of Mimbres pottery.

The Mimbres culture existed in this area from about 850 AD to 1150 AD. Early in that period they lived in pit-houses, later in above-ground pueblos. Kivas, the circular ceremonial pit-buildings, were part of their culture as they were of the Anasazi.

There remain from this culture many unique and beautiful pieces of pottery. Their pottery was black and white, very geometric, and often incorporated animals.
Pots were often found in burial sites, placed over theface of the corpse, with a hole broken into the bottom of the pot.
Just imagine these below as your everyday dishes.
Oops, I don't think that one was Mimbres.

Deming boasts many historical buildings still in use, but I decided to save the "walking tour' for another day. Here's a church I liked though.
And this is the Luna County Courthouse. I believe I read in the museum that it's roof is silver, but I'm not sure if that is still true. You can judge.

And tomorrow is a new day.

Thanks for the tour of Demming! Loved 'going back to' the museum! And the town is more attractive than I remember it being :-) And on my atlas, I see that Demming is actually surrounded by mile high peaks--and is near the Mimbres River. Lots to go back and explore!
