Where's Pecos Pete?

Pecos, Texas. Where's Pecos Pete? The Wandering Wonder Dog is tracking him.

Ah, no success, however, Chorro tracked him this far where we think in the year 2000 and something he may have escaped via this amazing space rocket!

Pecos, Texas, is the area where the movie, "Giant," was filmed in the 1960's. It's a classic and has received the honor of being in the National Film Registry, something akin to the National Registry of Historical Sites, as a movie that had cultural and historical significance. It was the story of how Texas ranchers became multi-millionaires in a very short time and the impact that had on Texas. And of course, for anyone my age it is also important because it was the last picture made by heart-throb James Dean, and for which he won an Academy Award.

The oil boom is over here, however, and Pecos is now a struggling-to-survive little town whose economy depends on maintaining the oil business.

Unfortunately, the museum was closed. I was looking forward to learning more about Pecos historically.

Adjacent to the museum we found this replica of Judge Roy Bean's house.

Searching back in the archives (my old blogs) I found this photo of the original.

Texas is such a huge state and it is amazing to think that Judge Bean's influence ranged from Del Rio, to Pecos, hundreds of miles to the north. Incidentally, Del Rio also had a museum with a replica of Judge Roy Bean's house.

What the replicas were lacking, however, were the unusual lighting that suggested Roy was leaving as we were entering. We took this one in his actual house.

We stayed with our friends the SKP's once again.

This part of Texas is flat and basically treeless.

Now that may sound dull and boring, but it makes for great sunsets. These were taken near our campground on the two nights we stayed.

Today was a good day
